Topic: Three Questions for Mr,John: Where do we come from, where are we now, and where are we going next?
Content:
Mr,John, a young architect based on storytelling-based concept work, hails from the Philippines. After immigrating to the United States, he attended culinary school and graduated from the Department of Architecture at California Institute of Technology, Pomona (2012). After gaining practical experience at an architectural firm, he completed his studies at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD) (2014). As an exchange student at Kyushu University's School of Design, he joined Professor Fujihara's laboratory and conducted fieldwork throughout Kyushu and so on. Since then, he continues to share his experiences, even as he works in the United States and Germany.
This time, Artisan Talk will be making its third outreach appearance at the Local Currency Dera Festival. While this is John and his family's first visit to Taketa, they have long had connections with the local residents of their native Philippines, a region known for its Cordillera rice terraces, cultivated by the Ifugao people in the northern mountainous region (highly acclaimed for their spectacular scenery, known as the "Stairway to Heaven," and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995). I (Fujihara) have also been given a tour of the area.
On a beautiful autumn day, we asked John about his impressions of his first visit to Taketa, a nostalgic trip to Kyushu. We have also prepared three questions.
Q1 Born in the Philippines, John studied architecture in the United States, and became an architect and university professor in Germany. For John, who has always been on the move and seen the world, is the world today a "happy" place?
Q2 With your baby and your family of three, are you considered immigrants in Germany?
Q3: What is the social prescription needed for this baby to live happily?
If you are interested in "Think Globally, Act Locally," looking out over the world from Taketa, please make an arrangement and join us. (Text: Keiyo Fujiwara)
