会場:art space tetra(福岡市博多区須崎町2-15)

"From the Tōhoku : Terayama’s Urban Fantasies"
Terayama Shūji’s work is emblematic of a historical moment in Japanese postwar when urban development and the radical social changes it generated was being questioned, answered and re-arranged in various artistic forms. Terayama was an eclectic artist and his work in poetry, theatre, film and social critique kept opening new spaces of experience within an emerging planetary urban space while resisting their reappropriation in a market-driven media-mix.
Central to his work was in particular the relation between the metropolitan centre Tokyo and the rural Tōhoku where he was born and raised, in the prefecture of Aomori, a space that remained throughout his career a reservoir of sensations and imaginations for questioning the new urban subjectivities, bodies and machines of his time. Most importantly, Terayama’s work shows us how fantasy remains central to social critique and the imagination of other collective subjectivities.
We will first watch the 1971 urban fantasy The Labyrinth Tale『迷宮譚』, followed by the 1978 legendary Grass Labyrinth 『草迷宮』based on a story of Izumi Kyōka of the same, telling the story of boy’s search for the lost words of his mother’s lullaby.
